In another fast-paced week at Housing Finance Strategies, our team paid close attention to Senator Crapo’s Housing Finance Reform hearings, hosted a Meet and Greet with Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) and committed to serve as the kick-off speaker at the #NEXTSummer19 conference in Chicago August 26 and 27.
In a two-day set of Hearings on Housing Finance Reform, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Crapo (R-ID) led a vigorous deep dive into ending the conservatorships of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that featured all sides of the debate centering on the future of the $5 trillion US mortgage market. It was curious that as these hearings concluded, the administration released a Presidential Memoranda outlining its policy direction on the same. In Washington, coincidences of timing are rare, and I expect this was an orchestrated effort to lay the groundwork for soon to be confirmed FHFA Director Mark Calabria and a series of administrative steps FHFA will take.
We were fortunate to have our own dialogue on critical housing issues through hosting a Meet and Greet with Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA). An attendee of the event shared with me afterwards how pleasantly surprised she was at the level of knowledge this freshman Congresswoman has on financial services issues. The insight and perspective Rep. Porter shared was appreciated by all.
As this week wraps, I am pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with the founders of the NEXT Mortgage Conference and have agreed to lend my industry presence to their upcoming event this summer in Chicago. The NEXT team offers our industry, and especially women executives, a chance to meet, grow and learn from peers and mortgage leaders across the lifecycle. It is an exciting time to associate with NEXT and we anticipate more news to come on this exciting endeavor.
