Fidelity National Financial (FNF) has confirmed it has been the victim of a “cybersecurity incident” affecting several business areas serving its mortgage and real estate customers. Those include services like title insurance, escrow, mortgage transaction services and technology.
Reports say that the cyberattack interrupted scheduled closings. Real estate agents and homebuyers were reportedly told the systems needed to close their deals wouldn’t be available until Sunday.
Last Tuesday, FNF filed an 8-K SEC filing announcing the incident and saying an intruder acquired certain credentials. Investigations are ongoing but an initial assessment shows no material impact on trade.
ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack and is giving FNF time to respond before revealing more information.
According to TechCrunch: “A person who said they work at a company that does business with Fidelity National Financial, and has knowledge of the incident, told TechCrunch that they heard FNF ‘decided to shut down their network, systems, and even their email […] in an attempt to scrub their servers in Jacksonville and prevent any issues’.'”
TechCrunch added that, “Another source, who said they worked in IT for a client of FNF, told TechCrunch that they heard FNF was “all locked up’.”
