April 2-4, 2023

Providing business intel that helps mortgage executives become better leaders.
Speaker Spotlight
Dr. Skylar Olsen, Chief Economist at Zillow
Dr. Olsen was a foundational member of Zillow Economic Research. She was at Zillow from 2012 to 2020. She recently returned to Zillow in July, 2022.
In the past two years, Dr. Olsen built and supported public-facing economic and data programs in Prop/FinTech through Reimagine Economics, a consultancy she founded, and was head of economics at Tomo, a digital mortgage startup.
Dr. Olsen earned her PhD in economics from the University of Washington, and also teaches Real Estate Evolution and Disruption there.
Jillian White, SRA, Renowned Appraisal Bias Expert
Jillian White, one of the industry’s few black female appraisers, was recently featured as a changemaker in residential valuations in the New York Times, and Our America: Lowballed, an ABC docuseries currently streaming on Hulu. She is currently a consultant to regulators, lenders and consumers seeking to take action on appraisal bias.
As an SRA designated appraiser, Jillian currently serves on The Appraisal Institute’s Government Relations Committee, as Trustee of The Appraisal Foundation’s Board of Trustees and is a former member of the New York State Appraisal Board.
Jillian founded White Picket Fence Appraisals, motivated by her experiences as a black female appraiser in a drastically white-male-dominated industry, and having to ‘whitewash’ her own family’s home in order to facilitate the sale. Her personal mission to educate and empower all homeowners.

KEYNOTE: Economic Insights: The Housing Market in 2023 and Beyond
The mortgage industry went from record-breaking volume to downsizing and layoffs, and a lot of headlines say it’s a by-product of the economy.
It’s not easy to make sense of all the moving pieces that make up the U.S. and global economies and understand how they impact the housing market.
Join the audience-favorite economist Dr. Skylar Olsen as she explores and explains today’s unique housing environment, and how the economy does and doesn’t impact it — as always, in her signature accessible, captivating style.
Keynote speaker: Dr. Skylar Olsen, Chief Economist at Zillow
Data: A better (and more profitable) way to secure and retain borrowers

Featuring:
- David Battany, Executive Vice President, Capital Markets at Guild Mortgage

Revenue NOW! Finding (and Funding) High Quality Borrowers in Underserved Markets
Today’s lenders are desperate to bring in new revenue. What they may not know is that a huge number of potential borrowers are hiding in plain sight all across the U.S.
Consumers from traditionally underserved markets, often communities of color, are ready to become homeowners. What’s more, there’s a lot of outside aid to help them get there. In this session, a panel of experts discusses the techniques for finding these untapped markets, and informs on the programs that can help turn them into homeowners. This is a must-attend for any lender looking to boost revenue, production and their bottom line in today’s challenging and competitive market.
Featuring:
- Jennifer Folk, COO of Minute Mortgage
- Tai Pherribo Christensen, Chief Diversity and Public Relations Officer for Arrive Home
- Tony Thompson, Founder & CEO of NAMMBA
- Mosi Gatling, Sales Manager & Loan Originator Specializing in Underserved Markets at loanDepot
Lending in the Age of Appraisal Bias
Lenders, are you prepared for bias audits? Most lenders are not only unprepared, but they also don’t know what bias audits are or how to protect themselves when they take place.
Join the industry’s foremost expert on appraisal bias as she outlines what regulators are doing about racial bias in valuations, and how it could impact unprepared lenders. Jillian White, the industry’s foremost expert on appraisal bias, will share a brief history on how our industry got where we are with appraisal bias, before moving on to what’s coming down the pike, and how lenders can leverage data (i.e. FHFA UAD) to do assure they pass regulatory examinations and mitigate the risk of lawsuits.
Featuring: Jillian White, SRA
Jillian will also lead a Hive discussion on appraisal bias.
Effective Marketing for Underserved Markets
Consumers from communities of color and traditionally underserved markets could be the answer to lenders’ production woes. The problem is, most lenders’ marketing is actually pushing these potential borrowers away.
Attracting and securing these potential borrowers requires unique actions and strategies. In this session, experts discuss what lenders can do to most effectively reach and resonate with this nuanced audience.
Featuring:
- Kristin Messerli, Founder of NextGen Research
- Mosi Gatling, Sales Manager & Loan Officer Specializing in Underserved Communities for loanDepot
Compliance Challenges in Today’s Market
Down economies and sluggish markets present lenders with their own unique set of challenges. Join a panel of mortgage compliance executives as they discuss today’s top compliance concerns, as well as the tools and techniques that lenders are using to address them.
Featuring:
- Laura LaRaia, Chief Legal Officer and Chief Enterprise Risk Officer at The Money Store
- Jennifer Sides, Chief Compliane Officer at CreditXpert

About
Providing business intel that helps mortgage executives become better leaders.
We know how important it is to you to excel at your job.
As a leader, a lot is riding on your decisions. It’s not just demands and expectations from bosses, boards of directors, shareholders, and fellow executives. Your decisions also impact the well-being of clients, employees, and partners, not to mention you and your family.
We understand that.
We also know that no leader automatically knows all the right answers. No leader has every important piece of intel. We know that most leaders operate in a vacuum, and the higher up you go, the fewer resources there are to help.
Many executives in NEXT’s community grew up in the mortgage industry. They are, and have been, the backbones of their companies in boom markets as well as down cycles. We believe it should be easier for them to get what they need to be the best leaders they can be.
NEXT arms C-suite and senior mortgage executives with the intel and community they need to excel as leaders, in their companies and in the industry.
Here are some ways we do that:
- Sessions centered on the direct knowledge and experience of C-suite & senior mortgage executives
- NEXT Hives™ — Interactive, executive think-tanks for exchanging intel, benchmarking progress, and solving today’s top challenges
- Über-high ranking executives attending the event specifically to meet executive peers, exchange intel, collaborate, and help one another succeed
NEXT is a boutique size event hosted in an environment suited to the expectations of high-ranking women lending executives. The event is held twice a year. The inaugural event was held in January 2018.
